FANTASY MOVIES: The movie industry is often criticized for relying too much on successful franchises:

But in our list of the five most anticipated fantasy titles of 2021, we will talk about only two such franchises.

Meaning there are three fresh takes on the fantasy genre below, let’s see what those titles are:

Chaos Walking – March 5

Directed by Doug Liman (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), “Chaos Walking” is a fantasy film starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley.

Initially, the script was written by Charlie Kaufman. However, his work has been edited by other writers, so we do not know how much is left from his original writings.

Set in a dystopian future, where apparently there are no women, where everyone hears the others’ thoughts and, technically, they cannot lie.

The main character hears that not all women are extinct and embarks on a journey to find the truth.

Free Guy – May 21

“Free Guy” is one of many films planned for 2020 and postponed due to the COVID health emergency.

Directed by Shawn Levy (“Stranger Things”, “The Internship”), “Free Guy” tells the story of Guy, an NPC (Non-Player Character), programmed as a bank employee. After being hacked, his character within the game becomes aware that he lives in virtual reality, so he decides to become the hero of the story.

If you like Ryan Reynolds, “Free Guy” is a movie you cannot skip because, as in “Deadpool”, the film is shaped around his personality and acting skills.

From the trailer, it is fantasy mixed with comedy and set in the video game world, “Wreck-It Ralph” or “Ready Player One” jumps to mind.

One thing is certain, Free Guy will be a popcorn movie not to be miss.

The Green Knight – 30 July

Directed by David Lowery (“The Old Man & the gun”) “The Green Knight” promises to be not only one of the most interesting fantasy movies of the year but one of the best this calendar year.

Inspired by the chivalrous romance story “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, the movie seems to be a black fairy tale, where King Arthur’s nephew will face a series of fantastic challenges before reaching the Green King.

The cast stars Dev Patel, while his co-characters will be Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, Alicia Vikander, and Sean Harris.

The staging seems to follow the rules of a horror thriller, where the journey is full of dark threats that will force the protagonist to make a journey within himself first.

Space Jam: A new Legacy – July 16

The next two picks are existing franchises, first up is the sequel to “Space Jam”, this time starring basketball star Lebron James and directed by Malcolm D. Lee (“Girls Trip”).

Adding another reason to re-watch the original “Space Jam”, which mixed live-action and animation that became popular after “Who framed Roger Rabbit”.

Outside of that, all we know is that LeBron James and Bugs Bunny team up to fight evil AI.

Godzilla vs King Kong – May 21

From basketball stars to monster movie giants…

“Godzilla versus King Kong” is directed by Adam Wingard (“Blair Witch”, “Death Note”), and is one of the most anticipated fantasy movies in 2021.

The combination of a huge budget, fantastic effects, and a giant mash-up has fans waiting on the edge of their seat.

Hopefully, this is the king of fantasy movies this year, delivering the best super-sized action sequences – and collectibles of 2021.
