While we use dollar bills every day, there are little-known, and frankly bizarre dollar bills that have been printed over the years that you might not have known about. And though they’re no longer being printed or are being used, let’s dive into history and check out the most interesting, rare, and otherwise weird dollar bills ever printed.

6. $100,000 Bill

Who wouldn’t want to get their hands on such a large bill? Featuring a picture of Woodrow Wilson, this note was actually a gold certificate, making it one of the most bizarre dollar bills printed. Interestingly enough, it was never circulated or issued for public use. And while collectors cannot legally hold the bill, some institutions like the Museum of American Finance display them for educational purposes.

5. $10,000 Bill

Featuring Salmon P. Chase on this bill, who was one of the most accomplished politicians in history, the $10,000 bill is next on the list of most bizarre dollar bills in history. This was the largest dollar bill currency ever printed for public use, but wasn’t used much given that its value was higher than the net worth of most Americans during this time. Given this, the bill was purged in 1969.

4. $5,000 Bill

Seeing a trend in the most bizarre dollar bills? These larger currencies, while they seemed good at the time, were not useful to most Americans, such as the $5,000 bill. First issued in 1918, the bill featured James Madison, but few were able to even carry this much around with them. Though primarily used for interbank transactions, due to lack of use, they removed the bills in 1969 as well.

3. $1,000 Bill

This bill originally had Alexander Hamilton on the front, but was later changed to Grover Cleveland. This bill was discontinued in 1969 due to inflation, thus leading larger bills to be pretty useless. The Treasury also started removing these bills from being printed in hopes of preventing money laundering.

2. $500 Bill

The Treasury minted a couple of versions of the $500 bill with a portrait of President William McKinley on the front. The last one was on the presses in 1945, but was formally discontinued 24 years later. While still legal tender, it’s almost impossible to get your hands on one. That being said, the $500 has a far exceeding face value.

1. $2 Bill

While the lesser currency on the list, $2 bills, is one of the most bizarre dollar bills, many people still have one in their possession to this day. They began printing in 1862, and originally featured Alexander Hamilton, but later portrayed Thomas Jefferson. Interestingly enough, these notes are still in circulation and are still recognized as legal tender; however, it’s one of the rarest currencies, with the last one printed in 2017.
