Military training is supposed to prepare soldiers for war, fear, pain, and chaos. Some methods, though, look less like conventional drills and more like something you’d expect in an old action movie. These five shocking military training methods were used by military or special forces units, and each one has a strange mix of purpose, danger, and spectacle.

Cold War Soviet Spetsnaz “Pain Management” Stunts

ScoopWhoop reported that Russian Spetsnaz pain management training included a burning concrete slab being smashed on a recruit’s stomach, along with stomach punches that recruits were not allowed to react to.

This type of Cold War-era special forces conditioning was meant to build pain tolerance and keep soldiers focused after shock or injury. That aspect makes sense, as war doesn’t pause because someone gets hurt. Still, this feels more like a stunt show than a useful drill. It’s bizarre because the lesson was wrapped in spectacle, not just combat readiness.

Taiwanese Marines’ “Road to Heaven” Coral Crawl

different types of coral

I’ve seen plenty of intense boot camp footage, but Taiwan’s “Road to Heaven” sits in its own strange category. Business Insider reported that Taiwanese marine trainees in Zuoying, Kaohsiung, had to leopard crawl along a 50-metre path filled with jagged coral and rocks as the final stage of a nine-week amphibious training program.

The point was mental toughness, pain control, and proof that a recruit could endure punishing terrain. Useful for amphibious forces, sure. But crawling shirtless across sharp coral turns training into a public ordeal and has a medieval-torture vibe, fitting nicely into these shocking military training methods.

Russian Special Forces “Shot to the Chest” Confidence Drill

A recruit stands in body armor, gets shot in the torso at close range, then has to fire back. That’s the reported Russian special forces confidence drill. According to ScoopWhoop, the exercise was meant to build calm and courage while proving the bulletproof vest could work under real impact.

The logic is simple, albeit brutal. A soldier who has felt the hit may freeze less in combat. Still, this is wild training as it’s not a false danger. It’s a live round to the chest; even with armor, it will bruise, injure, and shake anyone hard.

Chinese PLA “Hot Potato” With a Live Grenade

According to ScoopWhoop, China’s People’s Liberation Army used a drill where soldiers passed a live grenade after the pin had been pulled, before the last soldier threw it into a nearby hole and everyone dove for cover.

The stated goal was discipline and comfort around live weapons. That makes sense on paper, because grenades demand fast decisions in war. But the setup is what makes it so strange. It turns a deadly explosive into a squad version of “hot potato.” One mistake, and the lesson is over for good.

Belarusian Special Forces Tightrope Over Fire and Live Rounds

Belarusian special forces have used a test where soldiers balance on a rope above fire and smoke. ScoopWhoop adds that bullets were fired at their feet, while Business Insider described Belarus Interior Ministry special unit tests tied to earning a place in the elite “Red Beret” unit.

The method is meant to build balance and nerve during battlefield-style confusion. What’s terrifying is that this is the kind of training that doesn’t have a reset button. It’s bizarre because it sounds like a circus act crossed with a live-fire range, yet the point is deadly serious. Keep moving when everything tells you to panic.
