Ancient or historical coins aren’t the only ones with value. Today, some of the best coins to collect are the rarest state quarters or other newer additions that feature historical figures or places. These coins become rare due to their limited minting period, mistakes on the coins themselves, or coins that have been out too long and have few high-quality specimens left. Keep reading to learn about six of these rarest state quarters and what makes them so special to collectors.
6. 2000 P South Carolina Quarter

Starting our list of the rarest state quarters is the 2000 P South Carolina quarter. While the basic coin itself may not be super rare, the errors found on the coin can increase its value. Millions of these coins were minted at the Philadelphia mint, but only a few have errors such as double dies or “stinger tails.” These errors may not always be obvious, but once found, they can immensely increase the value.

5. 1999 Delaware Experimental Quarter

Fifth on our list of the rarest state quarters is the 1999 Delaware Experimental quarter. When the U.S. Mint was working on developing the Sacagawea dollar, which contained a manganese alloy, they used quarter dies because they were similar in diameter. A small number of 1999 state quarters were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese alloy. A total of 20 coins have been discovered with different materials and verified by the U.S. Mint.
4. 2005 P Kansas “In God We Rust” Quarter

Next on our list of the rarest state quarters is the 2005 P Kansas “In God We Rust” quarter. A popular collector’s item, the error coin occurred due to a grease-filled die during the minting process. This resulted in the “T” in “Trust” to be missing or faint on the coin, so instead of “In God We Trust,” we got the perplexing line, “In God We Rust.” Well-preserved specimens can be worth a lot of money.
