5 Most Expensive Picture Frames
When you look at a piece of art, chances are you’re not looking too closely at the frame. Often they are not as detailed as the painting, or they are meant to enhance what’s inside the frame. But there are some exceptions. If you’d rather pay attention to the outside of the painting, check out these five most expensive picture frames in the world today.
5. Samsung “The Frame,” $1,000-$2,000
It’s one thing to have a picture hanging on the wall, but what if it could turn into a TV? Samsung decided to make this dream a reality in 2017, creating The Frame. The television turns into a piece of art when not in use, and has interchangeable bevels in varying wood finishes to complement any home. Our favorite part about this frame is you can choose whatever piece of art you want to display in your home, but you do need to have at least $1,000 to pay for it.
4. Salvator Mundi’s Frame, $50,000
There is quite a history to da Vinci’s Salvatore Mundi piece, which became available for sale in 2017 not long after its rediscovery. The piece is one of twenty known works by da Vinci and sold at auction for just over $450 million. While the price tag of the painting seems crazy, it’s the frame’s price tag that is truly surprising.
New York-based company Lowy was tasked with framing the piece, and they selected a 16th-century Italian frame with a black finish and gold stenciled details, reaching a price tag of up to $50,000. Some paintings are sold for less than this amount.
3. Hyundai’s Digital Picture Frame, $70,000
Our third most expensive picture frame is similar to Samsung’s The Frame, but there is not a ton of information about this digital picture frame online. The frame was created by South Korean manufacturer Hyundai and is one of the most expensive picture frames available on the market. It consists of four panels, is so large that it can serve as a room divider, and has a price tag of around $70,000.
2. Debbie Wingham’s Diamond Frame, $2 million
Diamond lovers are sure to enjoy our second most expensive picture frame, created by fashion designer Debbie Wingham. Known for creating many “World’s Most Expensive” items, she has added to the list with her clock-themed frame lined with over 10,000 diamonds. This is one of the few cases where the painting inside costs less than the frame, which has a price tag of over $2 million.

1. The Scream’s Poetry Frame, $120 million
Sometimes a frame doesn’t have to be covered in diamonds to reach an astounding price tag. For our most expensive picture frame, we look at Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream. Sold at auction in 2012 for $120 million, the main reason the painting had such a high price tag was because of the frame. The original has a handwritten poem by Munch himself hidden on the frame, which is not present in any other rendition of The Scream.
