Soccer is back in the spotlight as the 2026 FIFA World Cup heads to the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. It’s the kind of global event that can wake up collectors everywhere. Soccer cards are serious collectibles, with some rare pieces selling for more than $1 million. Here are six rare soccer cards that show why the market is so massive.

2004–05 Panini Mega Cracks Lionel Messi Rookie Card #71

2004–05 Panini Mega Cracks Lionel Messi Rookie Card #71

One of the most expensive, if not the most expensive, rare soccer cards in the world is the Panini Mega Cracks Lionel Messi Rookie Card from 2004.

According to Fanatics Collect, a PSA 10 copy sold publicly for a whopping $960,000 in September 2025. However, a separate report from Qazinform stated a private sale value of $1.5 million. The latter was also through Fanatics Collect, but their private sales network.

This isn’t a card you’ll be stumbling across any time soon. It’s a Spanish-only issue, and Fanatics states that only 19 top-grade examples existed at the time of the 2025 sale.

1958 Alifabolaget Pelé Rookie Card #635

1958 Alifabolaget Pelé Rookie Card #635

Long before the era of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, there were sensational players like Pelé. The Brazilian star, who is credited with actually inventing skills and shots in the game, has huge value that collectors covet.

Card Ladder reported that a Swedish-issued Pelé card sold in 2022 for a massive $1.33 million. The card had a grade of PSA 9 and showed the superstar as a teenager at roughly the time of Brazil’s 1958 World Cup fame.

CGC Cards called the card one of the earliest collectibles from Pelé’s career, making it all the more valuable. Collectors on the hunt for classic cards may need to pick them up with lower grades, as vintage copies are rare.

2003 Panini Sports Mega Craques Cristiano Ronaldo Rookie Card #137

2003 Panini Sports Mega Craques Cristiano Ronaldo Rookie Card #137

I always like cards that catch a legend before the world fully knows what’s coming. This one shows Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting CP, before Manchester United, Real Madrid, and the CR7 brand became unavoidable.

QP Market Network reports a $319,800 public auction peak for the PSA 10 version, while CGC Cards calls it one of Ronaldo’s most valuable cards and his first major-brand issue from his debut pro season.

Collectors want certified copies with the highest grades possible within their price range. If buying rare soccer cards, look out for counterfeits, color issues, stock differences, and washed-out printing.

2014 Panini Prizm World Cup Gold Prizm Lionel Messi #12

2014 Panini Prizm World Cup Gold Prizm Lionel Messi #12

Serial-numbered to just 10 copies, this card shows Lionel Messi with Argentina during the 2014 World Cup cycle, the year Argentina reached the final.

Bleacher Report reported that a PSA 10 Gold Prizm sold for $522,000 at auction in April 2022. SportsCardsPro also lists the print run as 10, which is why collectors treat this as a modern Messi monster.

The big things to check are surface scratches, print lines, centering, and the grade on rare soccer cards. Chrome-style cards can look beautiful in a slab, but flaws show up fast under light.

1977 Futbol Diego Maradona Rookie Card #11

1977 Futbol Diego Maradona Rookie Card #11

Printed in Argentina, this card shows a young Diego Maradona before he became one of the most famous players in sports history.

Public.com found that a PSA 7 copy sold for $157,200 at Goldin Auctions in March 2021, and it noted that only two copies had earned PSA 8 out of a PSA population of 41 at the time.

That’s why collectors don’t always demand perfection with older and rarer cards. A clean PSA 7 can still be a prize. When it comes to cards, condition is everything, with buyers watching edges, paper quality, centering, fading, and any sign the card was handled roughly.

2024 Topps Chrome UEFA Euro Auto SuperFractor Lamine Yamal 1/1

2024 Topps Chrome UEFA Euro Auto SuperFractor Lamine Yamal 1/1

Consider this Topps Chrome, a modern grail for collectors. This one shows Lamine Yamal during his rise with Spain.

Sports Illustrated reported that his 2024 Topps Chrome UEFA EURO SuperFractor Auto 1/1 sold through Goldin for $396,500, setting a new record for a Yamal card. Only one copy exists, and that is the whole chase for high-end collectors.

The card also carries the National Debut stamp, which SI states marks his first-year Spanish national team offering.
