The first currency ever made by the United States Mint was the dime, back in 1792 by the order of George Washington. These rare dimes were mostly made from silver, but in 1965, all silver dimes were removed under the Coinage Act – replaced by dimes made of copper and nickel.

Amazingly, some dimes are extremely rare and valuable today, with values determined by a variety of reasons, including production errors and limited production runs.

5. 1945 S Micro S Dull Band Mercury Dime, $18,800

The 1945 S Micro S Dull Band Mercury Dime is different from other 1945 Dimes because it has a mintmark that is substantially smaller than usual:

This dime has flashy luster and an imperial-level presentation that makes it appealing to coin collectors. Plus, it’s made of 90 percent silver (10 percent copper).

While these dimes were minted in abundance only 1,200 have been graded in mint condition by the NGC (Coin Grading). One of these dimes was sold in an auction for $18,800.

4. 1860 Liberty Seated Dime, $27,600

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, and made at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1860 Dime features a seated Liberty.

In 1860, the United States Mint removed the stars and replaced them with the United States of America. More than 600,000 of these dimes were minted but only 100 have been found to be in good condition.

One of them was sold for $27,600 in an auction.

3. 1968 No S Roosevelt Dime Proof, $31,103

The 1968 No S Roosevelt Dime Proof is an extremely rare dime, as the San Francisco Mint mistakenly struck them without a mark:

Only 12 of these super rare dimes are known to exist as the mistake was caught early.

There is no mint record regarding these dimes, which makes them a complete mystery and increases demand among collectors.

One of these dimes was sold in an auction for $31,103.

2. 1856 S Seated Liberty Dime, $43,700

Made from 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, the 1856 S Seated Liberty Dimes were by the San Francisco Mint.

Only 70,000 of these dimes were minted and only a few remain today making them a rare dime to find.

An 1856 S Seated Liberty Dime in a good condition is worth around $43,700, the price may differ concerning the condition of the dime.

1. 1860 O Seated Liberty Dime, $51,750

Minted in New Orleans, the 1860 O Seated Liberty Dime has found a serious place in the heart of collectors due to its amazing design.

The former Star Observe design was replaced with the Legend Observe design. Only 40,000 of these dimes were minted and many of which were melted when Louisiana seceded from the Unions in 1861.

This dime holds significant importance due to its unusual and fascinating past, the estimated price is said to be around $51,750.
